CEO says Community Living BC working to ‘rebuild trust’ amid community criticism

For the first time, the CEO of Community Living BC is responding to criticisms from families and caregivers. Ross Chilton says he knows they must do better, but as Angela Jung reports, the public has yet to see any meaningful change.

The Crown corporation, which provides supports to adults with disabilities and complex needs, has been under the microscope in the wake of a coroner’s inquest into the death of Florence Girard. Girard, who had Down syndrome, died of starvation in 2018 while living in a home-share under contract from CLBC.

Developmental Services Waitlist Class Action

Ontario has been negligent and breached duties it owes to the class members under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, by virtue of these waitlists, some of which can last for years at a time as a result of the broken system. The issue of waitlists for desperately needed services has been a repeatedly identified issue for years, which Ontario has continued to ignore and failed to act upon in any reasonable manner.
